University of Padova — Medicine and Surgery: MedTech Programme
The Future of Medicine is Here — And It Starts in Padova
IMPORTANT STATUS NOTE: The MedTech programme is currently awaiting final approval from the Italian Ministry of Education. All details below are based on the officially published course description from the University of Padova. Always check www.unipd.it for the latest updates.
What Is the MedTech Programme?
The University of Padova — one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world, founded in 1222 — has introduced a groundbreaking new degree programme: Medicine and Surgery – MedTech. This is not a traditional medicine course with a new label. It is a purpose-built, fully English-taught, 6-year single-cycle degree (LM-41) that trains the next generation of physicians to be both clinically excellent and technologically fluent.
Where conventional medical programmes focus purely on clinical skills, MedTech integrates biomedical sciences, bioengineering, bioinformatics, statistics, digital health, and artificial intelligence — from the very first year. This makes MedTech one of the most innovative and forward-thinking medical degrees available in Europe today.

Padova — A City Built for Students
When you choose the MedTech programme, you are not just choosing a degree — you are choosing a lifestyle. Padova (Padua) is a historic university city in northeast Italy, and it has been shaped by student life for over eight centuries.
Why Padova Stands Out
- Over 30% of the city's population are students, giving it an extraordinarily vibrant, youthful, and international energy
- Extremely affordable compared to Rome or Milan — rent, food, and transport are budget-friendly
- Cycling-friendly city with an extensive network of bike paths — the preferred and most practical way to get around
- All university buildings, libraries, canteens, and study rooms are located within or near the city centre
- One of Italy's most liveable cities — safe, compact, and well-connected
- Just 30 minutes by train from Venice, and close to the Dolomites and Lake Garda
Cultural richness: Padova is home to the Scrovegni Chapel (Giotto's masterpiece), one of Italy's finest botanical gardens (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and Piazza delle Erbe — one of the country's most beautiful town squares. Students here live inside history, not just beside it.
What Makes MedTech Different?
This programme trains physicians who can do something most doctors cannot — understand, apply, and innovate with the technology that is rapidly transforming medicine.
Integrated Technology from Day One
Unlike traditional programmes where technology is an elective or a postgraduate add-on, MedTech weaves Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, and Bioengineering into the core curriculum from Year 1.
Dual Degree Opportunity
One of the most distinctive features of the programme is the possibility for students to earn additional ECTS credits to simultaneously qualify for a second degree in either:
- Biomedical Engineering (Class L-8 / L-9)
- Biology of Human and Environmental Health (Class L-13)
This means MedTech graduates can enter research institutions, biotech startups, medical device companies, and healthcare innovation hubs — not just hospitals.
Transdisciplinary Thinking
The programme promotes active collaboration across disciplines — medicine, engineering, biology, data science, and public health — preparing graduates for the interdisciplinary reality of 21st-century healthcare.
Global Standards
MedTech has been developed in line with the international standards of the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME), ensuring global recognition and relevance for graduates who wish to practice or research internationally.
Full 6-Year Curriculum Overview
The programme spans 360 ECTS credits over six years, with a minimum of 60 ECTS dedicated to internships and clinical rotations.
| Years | Phase | Subjects / Activities |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1–2 | Pre-Clinical Foundation | The Cell & Biomolecules, Physics, Anatomy, Histology & Embryology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Statistics, AI & Machine Learning, Early Internships |
| Year 3 | Transition to Clinical Sciences | Pharmacology, Pathology & Pathophysiology, Bioengineering Principles, Bioinformatics, Clinical Reasoning, Intermediate Internships |
| Year 4–5 | Core Clinical Training | Internal Medicine (with AI Decision Support), Surgery I & II, Imaging & Radiotherapy, Public Health & Telemedicine, Biomaterials, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics & Prosthetics, Nervous System Diseases, Clinical Rotations |
| Year 6 | Specialisation & Internship | Emergency Medicine, Elective Specialty Courses, Research Project, Clinical Internship for Medical Licensing, Final Thesis / Graduation Examination |
The AI Difference
What makes MedTech's curriculum uniquely powerful is that AI and Machine Learning appear in the first two years alongside Physics, Anatomy, and Biochemistry — not after clinical training. Students build the computational mindset simultaneously with the medical one. By the time they enter clinical rotations, they are already thinking about how technology can support diagnosis, treatment planning, and research.
Admission & Entry Requirements
Admission to the MedTech programme is planned to be based on a national entrance examination — most likely the IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) framework, though this is pending ministerial approval.
About the IMAT
The IMAT is the primary entrance examination for English-taught medicine programmes across Italian universities. It tests candidates in five areas:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics and Mathematics
- Logical Reasoning
- General Knowledge
Key Info: Provisional intake is 65 EU students and 15 Non-EU students. Final numbers are subject to ministerial confirmation. Competition is high — strong IMAT preparation is essential.
Language Requirements
The programme is taught entirely in English. However, by Year 3, students are expected to achieve B2-level Italian proficiency for effective communication during clinical rotations. The University of Padova offers free Italian language courses during the first two years to support this.
Tuition Fees & Scholarships
One of the most attractive aspects of studying medicine at the University of Padova is the affordable, income-based tuition model. Unlike fixed high-cost programmes in other countries, Italian university fees are scaled to your family's financial situation (ISEE).
Estimated Tuition
- Approximately €2,900 per year for MedTech (provisional)
- Students with lower ISEE income scores may qualify for full or partial tuition waivers
- Comparison: UK/US medical schools charge €30,000–€60,000+ per year
Scholarships Available
- University of Padova merit-based scholarships for high IMAT scorers
- Regional scholarships (Regione Veneto) for international students
- ESU grants covering tuition, housing, and meals
- FMA's IMAT Premium Course includes dedicated Scholarship Application Support to help you identify and apply for available funding
Career Pathways for MedTech Graduates
MedTech graduates are fully qualified physicians under Italian and EU standards (LM-41). The degree is recognised throughout the European Union and internationally. But what sets them apart is their expanded career toolkit.
Standard Medical Career Routes
- Access specialisation schools (medical residency) in Italy and across the EU
- Enrol in PhD research programmes
- Work in public or private hospitals and clinics
- Practice as an independent medical professional
MedTech-Exclusive Career Routes
- Medical Research Scientist at biomedical engineering or biotech companies
- Clinical Data Scientist / Medical AI Specialist
- Health Innovation Consultant for hospitals, ministries, and international organisations
- Medical Device and Technology Developer

FMA Insight: MedTech graduates are positioned to enter fields that barely existed ten years ago — Medical AI, Digital Health, Precision Medicine, Bioengineering — and will be among the most sought-after physicians of the next decade.
