The Italian Ministry of Universities and Research has officially announced the IMAT 2025 session via Ministerial Decree No. 599, published on 7th August 2025. Registration opens 26th August and closes 9th September 2025 at 15:00 GMT+2 — with absolutely no extensions. The exam is set for 17th September 2025 at 11:00 Italy time, with adjusted timings for international centres. Italian universities will publish their calls for applications at least 30 days before the test.   • Registration opens: 26 August 2025

Admission to Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary in English

Admission to the single-cycle master’s degree courses in:

  • Medicine and Surgery (LM-41)
  • Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics (LM-46)
  • Veterinary Medicine (LM-42)

based on passing a single national entrance test.


Admission Test Details

  • Same test for Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine in English.
  • Open to:
    • EU citizens
    • Non-EU citizens resident in Italy (as per art. 39, paragraph 5, Legislative Decree 286/1998)
    • Non-EU citizens resident abroad
  • Test structure (60 questions total):
    • 4 – Reading comprehension & general knowledge
    • 5 – Logical reasoning & problem solving
    • 23 – Biology
    • 15 – Chemistry
    • 13 – Physics & Mathematics
  • Format: Multiple-choice, 1 correct answer out of 5 options.
  • Test date: 17 September 2025 (11:00 Italy; adjusted for time zones abroad)
  • Registration: 26 August – 9 September 2025 (deadline 15:00 GMT+2) via Universitaly
  • Duration: 100 minutes
  • Locations: Italian universities + designated international centres

Scoring System

  • Max score: 90 points
  • +1.5 points for correct answers
  • -0.4 points for wrong answers
  • 0 points for no answer

Minimum passing score:

  • EU & Non-EU resident in Italy → at least 20 points
  • Non-EU resident abroad → no minimum score, but must score above 0

Ranking lists:

  • Two national rankings for EU & equivalent candidates (including Non-EU in Italy)
  • Separate university rankings for Non-EU residents abroad

Tie-Breaking Rules

  1. Higher score in the following order:
    • Biology → Chemistry → Physics & Math → Logic → Reading
  2. Possession of recognised English language certificates (see Annex 3)
  3. Disability preference if applicable (≥66% disability or as per Law 104/1992)
  4. Younger candidate by date of birth

Candidates with Disabilities / DSA

  • Additional time allowed:
    • Up to 50% extra for disabled candidates
    • Up to 30% extra for DSA (can increase in severe cases)
  • Must present official certificates (Italian or translated/legalised)

Available Seats

  • Seats divided between universities according to Table B in the decree.
  • Reserved quotas for Non-EU abroad candidates.

1. Reading Comprehension & General Knowledge

  • Understand written English texts (scientific essays, literary works, current affairs).
  • Identify abstract/specialised vocabulary, cohesion/coherence, explicit and inferred details.
  • General knowledge includes history, geography, society, institutions, law, economics, citizenship.

2. Logical Reasoning & Problem Solving

  • Complete arguments coherently from verbal/symbolic premises involving real/abstract problems.

3. Biology

  • Chemistry of life, cell biology, reproduction & genetics, evolution & biotechnology, anatomy & physiology, bioenergetics.

4. Chemistry

  • States of matter, atomic structure, chemical bonds, inorganic chemistry, stoichiometry, kinetics, redox, acids/bases, organic chemistry.

5. Mathematics

  • Numbers & algebra, functions, geometry, probability & statistics.

6. Physics

  • Units & measurements, kinematics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity & magnetism.

Impressions

  • Test centres will be available in the same countries as last year, cities to be confirmed.
  • Significant seat allocation changes:
    • University of Rome Tor Vergata: 150 non-EU seats in Tirana, Albania (new).
    • University of Catania: No EU seats, 60 non-EU seats.
    • University of Bologna: EU seats for medicine increased from 97 to 130; veterinary introduced.
    • University of Naples Federico II: Medicine seats for EU increased from 15 to 25, non-EU from 25 to 45.
    • University of Siena Dentistry: EU seats increased from 23 to 33; Non-EU seats decreased from 12 to 2.
